"do you wanna go back/you shoulda known that/the butterfly in reverse here is me/but mary anne, you're better than the world/you took a lot of time getting it right on this girl/ i said maryanne, you're better than the world/you did a lot of things right on this girl"

i highly recommend "butterfly in reverse" by the counting crows (yes, i have most of the new album...mmmm :))

One more rosey pic, and also some goofiness, on the fo toe blog

i really like the seaweed on her head. :)

What is your mythical woman?

I am a mermaid princess, then, I guess. :)

it is so hot

that the hershey's bar i have sitting next to me has melted. ryan gets home in an hour, and then i will definently find myself in the ocean with him for a little while. cold water, here i come!

Gnutella is a pain, but I'm managing to find some stuff anyway. Playlist of fairly newly downloaded material:

India.Arie- Ready For Love
India.Arie - I See God In You
Enrique Iglesias - Escape
Counting Crows - Why Should You Come When I Call
Counting Crows - Butterfly in Reverse
Lilo and Stitch Soundtrack - He Mele No Lilo
Lilo and Stitch Soundtrack - Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride

it's way too hot, and i'm way too bored. nothing's on TV but the Mayor giving a speech, it's too hot right now to bike anywhere, my head hurts, and i'm too lazy to do anything useful around the house because i'm really hot.

end complaint session. i guess i'll go play with gnutella for a while....

i got a goldfish yesterday - I have not chosen a name for him yet. Any suggestions? :)

i just actually bought something from a telemarketer. :) We had been meaning to sign up for Sunday paper delivery from the Providence Journal, and they called today so I told her to go ahead and send me the Sunday paper. I really wonder how often that happens to them. :)

Go see the complete photo collection from Boston and NYC at the corknut album collection :)

You'll see the small version - click the rectangles underneath for medium and large (and we mean large) versions. :)

Today Ryan has a day off, so I went to the DMV with him to get my RI learner's permit, and there was a sign on the door that said NO WRITTEN TESTS TODAY

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH

i CANNOT WIN!

:/

So, we just got back from NYC a couple hours ago and I'm all tired out - but I did post a few of the pictures for you. :)

There will be a few more NYC ones and some Bostons ones soon. In the meantime, go see photoblog

Thursday, June 20, 2002

so, tomorrow we are leaving early early to catch the commuter train from providence to boston, and spending the morning at the aquarium and then some time at quincy market. and then we are taking the train back and driving home and having dinner...and driving into NYC to stay with friends of Ryan's for the night! So I will tell you all about it Saturday night when we return! :)

I WENT SWIMMING IN THE OCEAN TODAY!!

first time this year. :) It was nice, even when the waves tried to knock me over. It was my bathing's suit's first time in the water too!

I'm modern Madonna, who are you? Madonna Quiz by Turi.

I do not get this quiz, really. but i took it anyway. :)

I'm sure you can guess what I wanted to name this file. :)

Someone at Ryan's office printed out this picture, and no one will claim it. Ryan showed it to me, and I still laugh every time I see it. :)

lilo and stitch opens this weekend! Yay! :)

we got a new wok this weekend! it is a good steel one, and it was only $15 at target. and so we had to season it (which basically involves scrubbing the protective coating of machine oil off, and then cooking oil into it for a while, repeatedly, so that the steel soaks some oil in) and it was so stinky! burning oil is not a good smell, and it will actually kill birds. so we left all the windows and the door open wiht the fan going, and that helped, but the kitchen still smells weird.

but our wok is nicely seasoned! i love the wok. :)

Words of wisdom from Steven Wright:

I put instant coffee in a microwave oven and almost went back in time.

I got food poisoning today. I don't know when I'll use it.

I went to San Francisco. I found someone's heart.

Sheryl Crow songs I'm really into today:

My Favorite Mistake
Mississippi
Hard to Make a Stand

"I'm gonna look at you till my eyes go blind..."

this is what started this conversation - a terrible picture of me looking dead tired and wearing the clothes i slept in :))

14:50:14) zworbex4: you look ethiopian
(14:50:33) sarahmchinchilla: ethiopian?
(14:50:42) sarahmchinchilla: 'cause i'm dressed in rags? ;)
(14:50:45) zworbex4: yes
(14:50:57) sarahmchinchilla: *falls over laughing* :-D
(14:56:42) sarahmchinchilla: "poor sarah walks the streets of this miserable ghetto barefoot, because her family can't even afford a simple pair of shoes"
(14:56:44) zworbex4: lol
(14:56:53) zworbex4: and like, torn shorts
(14:57:21) zworbex4: and we have, like amazing grace in the background
(14:57:44) sarahmchinchilla: yes!
(14:58:43) zworbex4: then we cut to having nellie look at a picture of you on a card and being like "you too can save a small ethiopian child like sarah"

I just purchased more phone time (2.9 cents a minute people - onesuite.com)
because I used up the last hour of our phone card minutes on a long and much-enjoyed conversation with Kelly last night. Ryan and I were both really dissapointed that she and the rest of the family couldn't come this weekend because of the craptacular weather, but it made me feel better to talk to her. And this morning, I need to call her back about something, so I am glad to have my 2.9 cent minutes in hand. :)

(16:10:58) UncleJohnnyS: i went to the dentist
(16:11:02) UncleJohnnyS: they hate me there
(16:11:06) sarahmchinchilla: why? :)
(16:11:10) UncleJohnnyS: i don't know
(16:11:17) UncleJohnnyS: they have it in for me
(16:11:24) UncleJohnnyS: they want me to die i think

This morning I went to the Social Security office in CT and finally got my SS card changed to my married name. Thank goodness!

I get a new card in the mail within 10 days. It was so quick - changing your name is easier than registering the car! :)

Ani Difranco - Swing
Garbage - Androgyny

go look at this gorgeous picture i took yesterday. go on, look!

i would have put it up here, but it's too big and i don't want to make it smaller, it wouldn't be as awesome. :)

(08:29:50) MikeFreebern: Hi! Does this mean you are online and I am writing to you? This is kelly :)
(08:29:59) sarahmchinchilla: Yes it does! Hi! :)

i wore sunblock, but my skin still tingles a little from the sun. i went after 3 on purpose, too...oh well. i won't mind having a little tan.
i might have to eat dinner on the deck tonight, it's so nice out...i should really live somewhere where it's always summer. :)

there is a kid on our road who had a lemonade stand set up yesterday. and when we went to the beach today, i put a few quarters in my pocket in case she was out there again. and on our way back, she was!

So a got a cup of lemonade from her, it was 50 cents. She asked if I wanted a "half a cup, or a whole-a cup" :) and I asked her if she had sold a lot of lemonade and she said nope, i was only her second customer. Her name is Julia and she has a snazzy lemonade stand, it is painted pink and says "Julia's Lemonade" on the front! She even has a cash register. It was great. :) (She makes some good lemonade too. :))

my kite is awesome. i took it for it's first flight today, and it was really fun. i got soaked by the ocean while i was flying it too, because I backed up right into a wave! :)

Friday, June 07, 2002

aaah, mocha frappucino

nectar of the gods

(thanks, ryan :))

ps - my kite came yesterday. it is gorgeous, and i cannot wait to fly it. it's all overcast and icky out today, but tomorrow it will be sunny and the wind will be less violent, and i am going to take it for it's very first flight! Yay! :)

i would take it's picture, but the camera is temporarily out of commission. so, pictures probably next week. :)

new theme playlist, on the nature of Love: ;)

Haddaway - What is Love
John Coltrane - You Don't Know What Love Is
Foreigner - I Wanna Know What Love Is
Charlotte Church - Tell Me What Love Is

Yanni - Love is All

i miss the piano a lot, sometimes. like when i listen to these songs with beautiful piano, it makes my fingers tickle. (it;s funny, when i had the piano i didn't play it much, but now i want it, now that it lives in barb's barn 4.5 hours away)

today, our weather is weird

this morning was hot and i opened the windows and now the curtains are being sucked out and the sky is dark

and pollen and petals and pine needles
are falling like snow.

read aabout the sacred gift of cows

i thought this story was pretty cool - "cow puppies" indeed. :)

according to UPS tracking, my kite is out for delivery

it will be here today, oh oh oh i am so excited (but i won't be able to fly it today, it's rainy, but this weekend should be good weather :))

music we fell asleep to last night:

Franz Liszt - Dream of Love
Dar Williams - Family
Donna Lewis - Agenais
(I fell asleep sometime during this song)

Wednesday, June 05, 2002

pretty phreakin' cool download of the day:

Amon Tobin - Chocolate Lovely

(pretty creepy sounding, but cool :))

also: IZ - Somewhere Over the Rainbow 3 Dog Night - The Show Must Go On (hee hee)

note to self:

tomorrow, do the 4 paintings you came up with this afternoon. otherwise you'll forget.

punk.

;)

spent all morning playing the IF game "A Bear's Night Out".

i fear i have a new addiction, although i am momentarily stuck and making my character kick things. :)

Tuesday, June 04, 2002

the air outside
smells like warm honey
and there's so much pollen
it covers the deck and my feet leave prints in the dusty yellow.

"i like silk
i like ice cream sandwiches too
i like fish sticks
but i love you"
("I Love You" by BNL :))

just for giggles, this is a story about a sexually frustrated dolphin.

This is not a story you read every day. :)

added to my course schedule since the original posting:

Great American Speeches
Topics In Film Theory and Criticism

Soon to be added, I hope:

COM206 Intro to Communication Studies (yeah, that makes sense)
and COM 200 Art of Human Communication

because i have to take them, i really hope the professors let me in.

Monday, June 03, 2002

everyone should read "Skellig" by David Almond. It's a really beautiful book (so many people miss out on really wonderful books because they are supposedly for children - this is one of those).

17:06:23) halpal0807 : I'd tell you that i am away but i find it rather obvious considering this is an away message.

for ally, (note: i am not pushing you to renounce all meat, i just thought you might want to see this :))

from http://www.becnet.org/ENews/98SpSuVeggie.html

About one half of the earth’s land mass is grazed by livestock which is the leading cause of topsoil depletion. Since grazing land is constantly being used up, forests are continually being cleared to make room for more cattle grazing. Every year a forest the size of Pennsylvania is destroyed to make more room for cattle grazing. An estimated 125,000 square miles of rainforest in Central America and the Amazon are destroyed annually, with over 1,000 species per year becoming extinct as a result. So basically speaking, each burger costs approximately 55 acres of forest.

Two hundred gallons of fossil fuels are burned annually to produce the beef currently eaten by the average U.S. family.

from the vegetarian youth network:

* A lot more water is required in animal agriculture than in plant agriculture. It takes only about 25 gallons of water to produce a pound of wheat and around 390 gallons to produce just one pound of beef. In fact, It takes less water to produce the food that a pure vegetarian needs for one year than to produce the food that a meat eater needs for a month.

so yeah, this is a big reason why i eat the way i do, outside of it's being healthier for me. it makes me feel like i can do something to help, even if i am just one little person.

we were on the beach yesterday, and there's still sand in my hair :)

This article is from last June's Nurturing Magazine. It made my blood boil. It's about women and housework, and all the reasons wives should clean their houses with glee (these reasons include that husbands hate to come home to dirty houses, that it burns calories, and that unlike weight loss, it provides nearly instant gratification!) The article also claims that a strong woman is not attracted to a man who does housework and "acts like a woman", but to equally strong men who do manly things without a shirt on, like fixing the car or hammering nails.

Sorry, but I just couldn't entirely contain the rant I want to have. Read it and rant with me! ;)

last night we watched some of "Walking With Dinosaurs" on the Discovery Channel (which comes in on the computer, for some unexplained reason)

and all night last night I had Jurassic Park dreams
of being chased by this little dino guy
through a McDonald's, of all places,
and a school, and at some point in the dream i got burned in an explosion, but
it just felt like a sunburn.

As the United States urges all US citizens to get out of India, Ryan's coworker Sankar is in India for at least another week, for his wedding (an arranged marriage - he took a good long time getting his PhD in order to put it off, as he's never met this girl he's marrying, only seen her picture). I worry about Sankar, even though I don't even know him.

Sunday, June 02, 2002

we are getting all musical lately, ryan and i. he has been playing his guitar and i have been playing my violin and we are going to be a Tremendous Duo. We want to learn to play U2's "Van Dieman's Land" together. I am trying to get my callouses back by playing through Suzuki 1 every night to warm up, then playing something harder for a while - I'm working on getting my technique back too, not playing for a long time made me a bit rusty!

take the emo quiz
created by jessi

hee hee. :)

ps - the britney SNL was on last night...i re-watched it with glee ;)

(gratuitous britney posting ;))

if i have not already recommended it, go download "American Girls" by Counting Crows (it's with Sheryl Crow). It is a wicked good song. :) (thanks to my little brother for the recommendation ;))

Vanilla Coke has come to Rhode Island.

I am quite fond of it. Last night I drank some while eating falafel sandwiches on the deck under the umbrella. After we had come back from lying on the beach with books for a couple of hours... yesterday felt so idyllic, the quintessential summer day. and today looks like it's going to be another one of those, where we leave all the windows open and the smell of flowers blows in while we sleep at night.

:)
